Which RTA test do you need to book?
The RTA service covers four tests. You book them one after the other. After you pass a test, RTA sends you an SMS and an email with a link to book the next one.
- Knowledge Test (theory test): 40 questions, and you need at least 30 correct answers to pass. Before you can book it, you complete the theory lectures at your driving institute. They take 8 hours for light vehicles, motorcycles and buses, 9 hours for heavy vehicles and 4 hours for light or heavy equipment.
- Yard Test (also called the parking test or smart yard test): parking and manoeuvring in the institute yard. First you must pass the Driving Institute Evaluation Test, an internal check of your readiness.
- Road Test (the “final test”): driving in real traffic with an RTA examiner. You can book it once you have passed the Knowledge and Yard Tests and finished the required training.
- Evaluation Test: one test for people who already held a licence. It applies after a licence was withdrawn, suspended or cancelled, if a Dubai licence expired more than 10 years ago, or if the licence was not issued within 1 year of passing the Road Test.
Age rules in Dubai (RTA, October 2026): for a car (light vehicle) you can open a traffic file from 17 years and 6 months, and the licence is issued once you have passed all tests and turned 18. For a motorcycle the minimum age is 17. You need an open training file and a valid Learning Permit before RTA lets you book any test.
How to book an RTA test online on rta.ae, step by step
The online route is the fastest, and the appointment is confirmed instantly. It is the same for all four tests. Only the tab you pick at the start changes.
Step 1: open the service and pick your test
Open the RTA service page and click the tab for your test (1): Knowledge Test, Yard Test, Road Test or Evaluation Test. Then press Start Now (2). The button takes you to the RTA login (ums.rta.ae). That is why people search for “ums rta ae test booking”: it is the same service.
Step 2: log in
Choose Individual Account (1). You can log in with UAE PASS, or with the details of your Emirates ID or passport. RTA then sends an OTP to the mobile number registered on your traffic file.
Step 3: choose a date, add interpretation if needed, and pay
The steps below are RTA's own list for the website channel:
- Log in with UAE PASS, Emirates ID or passport (2) and enter the OTP from your phone.
- Select a free appointment, or change the one you already have.
- For the Knowledge Test, choose the test language. If you need a translator, select Remote Interpretation (3).
- Pay the fees by card (4).
- The receipt and your appointment date arrive by SMS and email.

Book on WhatsApp with Mahboub
Mahboub is RTA's chatbot. It books and changes test appointments on the RTA website, in the RTA apps and on WhatsApp (2). You type the request (3), for example “Book a knowledge test appointment” or “Book a road test appointment”.
- On the website or in the app: type the request, click Apply Now, then enter your traffic file number and your year of birth. Choose the slot, confirm the OTP and pay.
- On WhatsApp: Mahboub checks that your phone number is linked to a valid Learning Permit, and for later tests that you passed the Knowledge Test. Then you choose the slot and pay.

The institutes on RTA's list include Al Ahli, Belhasa, Bin Yaber, Dubai Driving Centre, Drive Dubai, Eco Drive, Emirates Driving Institute, Emirates Transport, Excellence, First Driving Centre and Galadari. Not every branch runs every test. Some branches, for example, run no Yard Test for light vehicles. Ask your own institute where your test takes place.

These are RTA's test fees only. Lessons, the learning file and the licence itself are charged by your driving institute and RTA separately.
How to reschedule or change an RTA test appointment
- Postpone: through the online channels or your driving institute, up to 24 hours before the test date (3).
- Bring it forward: at any time, if an earlier slot is free, for AED 320. You use the same booking service.
- Change window: RTA lets you change the appointment within 30 days, depending on free slots.
- Interpreter: book remote interpretation at least 5 days before the Knowledge Test. You can move it up to 3 days before. The interpreter joins by online call and translates every question and option.
- Missed test: if you do not show up, the fee is gone. You book a new appointment and pay again.
- 6-month rule: your training file is suspended if you take none of the tests (Knowledge, Yard or Road) within 6 months of your last appointment date (1).
Road test booking: the extra rules
- Waiting time: after you finish the required training, the road test slot can take up to 14 working days.
- Rescheduling: the same 24-hour and AED 320 rules as above.
- Licence within a year: if your licence is not issued within 1 year of passing the Road Test, you must take an Evaluation Test.
- After a fail: you must take 4 more training sessions before the next Road Test. Then you can book again straight away.
On the test day
- Arrive 30 minutes early. The appointment is confirmed on site.
- Bring your Emirates ID. It is the service requirement RTA lists for every test.
- Dress modestly. RTA's FAQ says shorts and similar clothing are not appropriate at a government test.
- After a pass, RTA sends the SMS and email with the link for your next test.
Special cases
- Licence expired more than 10 years ago: you take one Evaluation Test, and all categories come back with it. Holders of a licence from an exception country do not need the Evaluation Test to renew their Dubai licence.
- Licence withdrawn, suspended or cancelled: the Evaluation Test takes place at the Al Qusais branch of the Emirates Driving Institute, for men and women.
- Unexchangeable foreign licence or Golden Chance: the Instant Test (AED 420) lets you go straight to the test.
Common mistakes
- Trying to book before the theory lectures or training are complete. The booking will not open.
- Leaving more than 6 months between tests. Your file is then suspended.
- Postponing on the day before the test. The 24-hour limit has passed and the fee is lost.
- Booking the interpreter too late. It must be at least 5 days before the Knowledge Test.
- Paying an agent. Booking on rta.ae, Mahboub or the apps costs only the RTA fee.
