LicensePlate.ae Team

You've watched the auction records in the news. AA 8 for a nine-figure sum. P 7 sold for AED 55 million. A billion raised in a single Most Noble Number evening. And somewhere between "one day I'd like a plate like that" and actually placing your first bid, you hit the same wall every first-timer hits: How do I actually do this? Where do I register? What's the deposit? What happens if I get outbid in the last thirty seconds? What if I win — and then can't pay in time?

This is the walkthrough we wish someone had handed us before our first RTA online plate auction. Every screen, every fee, every trap, in the order you'll actually encounter them.

What Is the RTA Plate Auction, Exactly?

The RTA plate auction is Dubai's official channel for issuing premium and distinctive vehicle number plates. Operated by the Roads and Transport Authority through rta.ae and the Dubai Drive app, it releases roughly 300 plates per online cycle (2-, 3-, 4- and 5-digit combinations) plus a smaller number of ultra-premium plates through open-hall auctions. Every plate sold at an RTA auction is registered directly to the winning bidder — there is no dealer margin, no marketplace fee, and no reseller between you and the government.

The auction is the primary reason short-digit and pattern plates hold their value in the UAE: supply is deliberately controlled by the RTA, and the release cadence is public. If you understand the calendar and the process, you gain the same access as every collector, investor and driver in the country.

If it's your first plate — start online. The lower deposit, longer window and calmer pace let you learn the interface without committing to a live-hall adrenaline environment. Once you understand how bid increments and last-minute extensions work, the leap to a physical auction is manageable.

For the current schedule, we maintain the 2026 RTA auction calendar — read it alongside this walkthrough so you know when to be ready.

Eligibility: Who Can Bid

Direct answer

Any individual with a Dubai traffic file can bid in an RTA online plate auction. That includes UAE nationals, GCC citizens, residents and — via the traffic-file route — non-residents. A driving licence is not required to own the plate. Full details in our non-resident buying guide.

Documents you'll need on hand

  • Emirates ID (residents) or passport + entry stamp (non-residents opening a traffic file for the first time)
  • Active mobile number registered in the UAE (for OTPs)
  • A credit/debit card (Visa, Mastercard) or manager's cheque for the deposit
  • UAE-based bank account is helpful for automatic refund of the deposit if you don't win

Companies

Corporate bidders need a valid Dubai trade licence linked to a company traffic file, and a signed authorisation letter for the individual placing bids on behalf of the company. See our business owners' plates guide for the tax and branding angle.

The 5-Step Online Auction Flow

Editorial infographic showing the 5-step RTA online plate auction flow: 01 Register (AED 120), 02 Deposit (AED 5,000 refundable), 03 Browse ~300 plates on RTA and Dubai Drive, 04 Bid with a 7-day window, 05 Pay & Mount within 10 working days including 5% VAT and transfer — LicensePlate.ae
Every RTA online auction follows the same 5-step sequence. Learn it once, use it every cycle.

Everything below is one section per step, in the exact order it happens.

Step 1 — Register on rta.ae

What you're doing

Creating (or logging into) an RTA account that is linked to your Dubai traffic file, then filing an application to participate in the specific auction cycle.

How to do it (screen-by-screen)

  1. Go to rta.ae. Top-right → Login / Register.
  2. Choose UAE Pass if you have it. This is the fastest onboarding — your Emirates ID and traffic file are auto-linked.
  3. Without UAE Pass: create an account with your Emirates ID number. Verify by SMS OTP.
  4. Navigate: Services → Vehicle Licensing → Auction of Distinguished Plates.
  5. Select the current cycle from the auction list. It will show the plate count, the opening date, and the closing time.
  6. Click Register for this Auction and pay the AED 120 non-refundable participation fee (AED 100 base + AED 20 Knowledge & Innovation Fee).

Traps to avoid at Step 1

  • Wrong emirate. You need a Dubai traffic file — an Abu Dhabi file will not let you bid on RTA (Dubai) plates. If you only have an AD file, open a Dubai file first at any RTA Customer Happiness Centre (Umm Ramool, Al Barsha, Deira).
  • Late registration. Registration usually closes several hours before the auction opens — read the cycle's fine print.
  • Wrong email. Bid notifications, refund confirmations and win notices go to the email on the RTA account. Make sure it's one you check.

Step 2 — Pay the AED 5,000 Security Deposit

What it is

A refundable hold to prove you're a serious bidder. For online cycles the deposit is AED 5,000; for open-hall it is AED 25,000. You can bid on any number of lots within a single cycle on the same deposit — the deposit is per participant per cycle, not per plate.

How to pay

  • Online: RTA accepts Visa/Mastercard via the auction registration screen. The AED 5,000 is placed on a temporary hold on your card.
  • In person: A manager's cheque payable to Roads and Transport Authority, submitted at a Customer Happiness Centre.

What happens to the deposit

  • You don't win any lot: full AED 5,000 refunded to source within a few working days.
  • You win one or more lots: the deposit is applied to the settlement of your winning lot(s), with the remainder due within 10 working days.
  • You win and don't pay in time: the deposit is forfeit and the plate is re-listed. Do not let this happen — it is the number-one avoidable loss.

Step 3 — Browse the ~300 Lots

Where the plate list lives

Once registered, the plate list opens in your RTA account under the specific cycle. The same list mirrors to the Dubai Drive mobile app and is visible even to non-registered users a few days before the cycle opens — useful for pre-cycle research.

What each lot shows

  • Plate code (letter) and number
  • Category (short 2-digit, 3-digit, 4-digit, 5-digit)
  • Starting price
  • Bid increment
  • Estimated closing date/time within the 7-day window

Doing the pre-bid work

Before you bid a single dirham, do these three things:

  1. Value the plate independently. Use our free UAE plate value calculator or the framework in how to value any UAE number plate. Never rely on the starting price — it's often 5–10% of realistic market.
  2. Cross-check historical sales. Compare against our 2026 Dubai plate price check. If a lot is priced 3x its historical band, walk away.
  3. Set your absolute cap before day one. Written down. In your notes app. This is the single most important thing you'll do all week.

Step 4 — Bid, Cap, and Survive the Closing 5 Minutes

Phone mockup of the live RTA plate auction bidding screen showing Dubai AA 3, current highest bid AED 3,250,000, 47 bidders, bid history and a red PLACE BID button — with a legend panel explaining every field: time remaining, highest bid + bidder count, suggested next bid, VAT + fees preview, and refund path — LicensePlate.ae
The live bidding screen, decoded. Every first-timer misreads at least two of these fields.

How bidding works

Each lot has a starting price and a minimum increment (usually 5% of the current highest bid, rounded to the next RTA step). You place a bid, the system records it as the highest, and any competing bidder must beat you by at least one increment. When the countdown expires with no new bid, you win.

The auto-extension rule (this is where first-timers get burned)

If a bid is placed in the final 5 minutes of a lot's close, the timer auto-extends by 5 minutes. This is intentional. It prevents "snipe" bids from stealing lots at the last second and keeps competitive lots open as long as bidders keep bidding. In practice: if you're serious about a plate, expect the last hour to become the last three hours.

The three bidding modes people actually use

  1. Passive watcher: place one bid at the reserve, wait, come back at close. Wins only if nobody else wants the lot. Fine for cold plates, useless for anything remotely desirable.
  2. Incremental bidder: raise by the minimum every time you're outbid. Emotionally satisfying and financially disastrous — you almost always end up 20–40% above your cap because you keep telling yourself "just one more".
  3. Cap-and-return: set your written cap. Bid the reserve. Come back in the final hour. Raise straight to a number close to your cap in one move (not the minimum increment). Force the competition to either walk or overpay. Walk away yourself if it goes past your cap. This is the disciplined approach that actually wins plates without wrecking your budget.

Bid strategy checklist

  • Have your cap written down before day 1.
  • Do not bid on more lots than you can afford to win simultaneously (they can all close on you).
  • Never chase past your cap — you can always try the next cycle.
  • Monitor bidder count. High count = expect fast escalation.
  • Log in from a stable connection for the closing window. A dropped Wi-Fi during the final minute of a competitive lot is not a story you want.

Step 5 — Pay, Transfer, and Mount

The last 10 working days: settle, transfer, mount. Miss the window and you lose the plate and the deposit.

Payment window

You have 10 working days from the close of the auction to pay the full winning amount. This includes 5% VAT on the plate price plus the standard AED 425 plate blank fee (short plate) or the applicable blank fee for your plate size.

Accepted payment methods

  • Up to AED 50,000: cash accepted at any Customer Happiness Centre, or credit/debit card online.
  • Above AED 50,000: manager's cheque or credit card only. Cash is not accepted above the threshold.

Transfer to your vehicle

Once payment clears, you have three paths:

  1. Assign to a car you own now. The old plate is returned to RTA (or kept for another vehicle you own if you want to hold it). Complete via Vehicle Plate Management on rta.ae or the Dubai Drive app.
  2. Reserve the number for a future vehicle. You can hold the plate on a reservation while you buy or import the car it's going on. See our reserve-a-plate walkthrough.
  3. Resell. You are free to list the plate on the secondary market — that is where LicensePlate.ae comes in. Many investors bid at RTA specifically to flip.

Physical plate collection

Once transferred, the physical plate is issued from an RTA vehicle inspection centre. Bring your car for plate mounting on the same visit. Turnaround is usually same-day.

Six Mistakes That Turn First-Timers Into Non-Payers

1. Bidding without confirming the 10-day payment plan first

Bidders assume they can arrange a bank transfer or facility after they win. If your bank needs 5 working days to process a manager's cheque request, you have exactly 5 working days of buffer — cutting it fine on a legitimately liquid buyer, catastrophic on anyone stretched.

2. Bidding on multiple competitive lots simultaneously

Each lot you bid on can win. If two hot lots close in the same hour and you win both, you owe both — full amount, both within 10 working days. Bid on one competitive lot at a time unless you can settle multiples.

3. Confusing the starting price with a fair price

The starting price is not a valuation. It's a floor set by RTA to guarantee minimum revenue on the lot. Some plates start at AED 15,000 and clear at AED 250,000; some start at AED 100,000 and clear at AED 105,000. Do your own valuation first.

4. Ignoring the auto-extension rule

If you bid at 5 minutes to close and go to sleep, a competitor's counter-bid extends the timer by 5 minutes — and their next by another 5. Losing a plate at 3 AM because you didn't stay awake is the classic first-timer story.

5. Underestimating VAT and blank fees

Buyers budget the exact bid amount and forget that 5% VAT is due on top. On a AED 500,000 plate that's AED 25,000. Line it up before you bid — the RTA won't let you settle at anything less than the full amount.

6. Not linking the plate to a vehicle within a sensible window

Reservation is fine, but the sooner you either mount the plate or list it for resale, the sooner you start compounding value. Idle premium plates on reservation lose momentum.

Bidding Strategy That Actually Works at RTA Auctions

Pick 2 plates you'd genuinely be happy with — not 15

A shortlist of 2 disciplined targets outperforms a wishlist of 15 hopefuls. Fewer lots means sharper valuation work, tighter caps, and less emotional escalation.

Set the cap using three anchor points

  • Historical comparable — nearest recent sale of an equivalent plate.
  • Resale margin you'd accept — if you're investing, what's the exit price that makes this worth the capital lock?
  • What you'd pay if you never resold — for personal-use bidders, the number where you'd be glad to keep the plate for a decade even if the market went sideways.

Your cap is the lower of those three, not the higher.

Use the final 15 minutes properly

Don't bid the minimum increment. Bid straight to a number close to your cap. This signals that you are willing and forces the competitor to make a real decision. Nine out of ten emotional bidders fold when they see a big jump — because they had no plan.

Have a "plate B"

If your top target overshoots, be ready to switch bidding attention to your second target within the same cycle. This is why we recommend two, not one — the second is a fallback, not a duplication of effort.

Track the results even when you lose

Every cycle produces a public results sheet. Track it. Six months of results teaches you more about real plate pricing than any guide can. See our recurring analysis: 2026 RTA auction mid-year update.

FAQ — Every Question a First-Time Bidder Asks

How do I bid at the Dubai RTA online plate auction?

Register at rta.ae or via the Dubai Drive app, pay the AED 120 registration fee and the AED 5,000 refundable security deposit, browse the ~300 available plates, place bids during the 7-day window, and pay the full winning amount plus 5% VAT within 10 working days if you win.

How much is the deposit for the RTA plate auction?

AED 5,000 for online auctions and AED 25,000 for open-hall auctions. The deposit is refundable if you don't win any lot; applied to your settlement if you do.

What is the AED 120 fee for?

AED 100 is the RTA participation fee and AED 20 is the Knowledge and Innovation Fee. Both are non-refundable and cover the cycle you register for.

Can I bid without being a UAE resident?

Yes. You need a Dubai traffic file, which non-residents can open. See our non-resident buying guide for the full process.

How long is the online auction?

Seven consecutive days. Individual lots close at scheduled times within the window, and any bid in the final 5 minutes auto-extends the timer by 5 minutes.

What happens if I win and cannot pay?

Your AED 5,000 deposit is forfeit, the plate is re-listed, and RTA may restrict your participation in future auctions. Do not bid without confirming your payment path first.

Is VAT charged on the winning bid?

Yes, 5% VAT applies to every RTA plate auction sale. Budget it on top of your winning bid.

Can I finance or pay for a plate in installments?

The RTA settlement itself must be paid in full within 10 working days — there is no RTA-side installment. Some UAE banks offer personal-financing solutions that can be used to fund the settlement; check with your bank before you bid.

Can I bid on multiple plates in the same cycle?

Yes, on the same AED 5,000 deposit. But every lot you win becomes a settlement obligation — never bid on more lots than you can afford to settle simultaneously.

How is the minimum bid increment calculated?

Typically 5% of the current highest bid, rounded to the next RTA-defined step. On a plate at AED 100,000 the next bid is roughly AED 105,000; on AED 1,000,000 it is roughly AED 1,050,000. Higher tiers use larger steps.

Can I withdraw a bid?

No. Every bid placed is binding. Cap yourself before you bid, not after.

How do I actually get the physical plate after winning?

Once payment clears, RTA issues the plate at any vehicle inspection centre. Bring your car and it's mounted on the same visit.

Can I resell a plate I win at auction?

Yes. You are the legal owner as soon as the transfer is complete. Many investors bid at RTA specifically to resell on the secondary market — see our RTA vs secondary market comparison for the resale economics.

Where do I see the full RTA auction schedule for 2026?

Our 2026 RTA auction calendar tracks every cycle, plate count, and result as it happens.

The Real Value of Your First Auction Is the Second One

The first RTA auction you bid in is a tuition fee. You will misread a screen. You will over-cap by 5%. You will hesitate on a plate you should have taken. That is not a failure — that is the process working. Every serious plate owner in Dubai has that first cycle behind them.

The value shows up at your second cycle. You know the screens, you know the auto-extension rhythm, and you have a valuation muscle that the average bidder does not. The AED 120 registration fee is one of the cheapest business-school tuitions in the country.

When you're ready to go live: pull the current 2026 RTA auction calendar, run any plate you're considering through the free plate value calculator, and if you want a second opinion before committing to a bid, our team lives and breathes this market — reach us through LicensePlate.ae.

Good luck at your first cycle. The best plate owners we know all started with a bid they weren't sure they'd win.
