Buying a used diesel car in the UAE

What a used diesel car costs depends above all on the make and model, then on the model year, the body — pickup, van or SUV — and the mileage. The tables below show the current asking prices from the adverts listed.

This guide covers the diesel models listed, the price by year, budgets, where diesel engines are found in the UAE, what to check on a used diesel, and GCC against imported cars.

Where diesel engines are found

In the Gulf, diesel engines are found mainly in pickups, vans and minibuses and in some four-wheel drives such as the Land Cruiser and Hilux. Many European cars brought in from outside the Gulf are diesel too. The body type filter beside the list narrows it to pickups, vans or SUVs.

What to check on a used diesel

Starting and smoke. Start the engine from cold. It should catch quickly and run smoothly, without heavy black, blue or white smoke once it is warm.

The turbo and the injectors. Listen for whistling or rattling from the turbo, and notice any hesitation or misfire under load; worn injectors and turbos are costly to replace.

The particulate filter and AdBlue. Newer diesels have a particulate filter and many use AdBlue. Look for warning lights on the dashboard and ask about the car's use — a filter on a car driven only short distances in town can clog.

Work use. Pickups and vans often carry loads or tow. Check the clutch on a manual gearbox, the suspension and the load bed, and ask how the vehicle was used.

Service history. Ask for the service record with the VIN, with oil and fuel filter changes and, where the engine has one, the timing belt.

The transfer. Confirm the vehicle carries no outstanding finance, and pay when it is registered in your name — never a deposit in advance.

GCC or imported

A GCC diesel was sold by the brand's dealer here and is serviced locally. An imported one — often European or Japanese — may differ in engine and emissions equipment; ask what the dealer here will service and run the VIN through a history report before you pay.

Common questions

How much is a used diesel car in the UAE?

It depends above all on the make and model, then on the year, the body and the mileage. The tables on this page show the current asking prices by model and by model year.

Which cars come with a diesel engine in the UAE?

Mainly pickups, vans, minibuses and some four-wheel drives, plus many European cars imported from outside the Gulf. The model table above lists the diesel models with adverts now.

What should I check on a used diesel?

The cold start and the smoke, the turbo and the injectors, the particulate filter and AdBlue warning lights on newer cars, and the service record with oil and fuel filter changes.

Diesel or petrol?

A diesel suits long distances, heavy loads and towing; a petrol engine suits shorter trips. For petrol cars see the petrol car page.
